The Go-Ahead Group has been awarded Network 3A ‘Murrbahn’ routes in Germany – its third rail network in the country.

The Go-Ahead Group has been awarded Network 3A ‘Murrbahn’ routes in Germany by the Baden-Württemberg public transport authority and the Bavarian rail authority.

German rail network for Go-Ahead

The network provides commuter services and important links between Stuttgart and Nuremberg, within the German federal states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.

Stadler Flirt3XL trains will run approximately 1.3 million train kilometres a year on the route, which is currently operated by Deutsche Bahn.

The 13-year franchise is the second contract and third network that Go-Ahead’s German operating company has been awarded.

“We are pleased to have been awarded a contract for this important commuter route,” said Go-Ahead Chief Executive, David Brown. “We have 20 years’ experience of providing UK rail passenger services and our established team in Berlin will continue to consider further regional rail opportunities as part of our international strategy to build a long-term German rail business.

“Germany has a stable and growing economy and the largest liberalised rail market in Europe with regional passenger revenue of €6.9 billion and 50 billion passenger kilometres.”

The franchise is due to commence in December 2019.
