Atkins has been announced as the preferred supplier for two of Network Rail’s signalling renewal framework contracts. The contracts, for the Area 4A Anglia and Kent and Area 4B Sussex and Wessex regions will run for seven years and are a vital part of Network Rail’s programme to maintain and modernise its signalling systems.

The contracts awarded to Atkins have a revenue potential of up to £400 million over seven years, starting from 2 April 2012. Services provided by Atkins will include specialist signalling systems design, installation, testing and commissioning, and associated power, telecommunications and ancillary civil engineering.

David Tonkin, managing director of Atkins’ UK business, said: “This is an important and notable win for the UK business and it underlines the strength of our relationship with Network Rail. They are embarking on a major programme of signalling works and have chosen only the most trusted engineering companies to support them and we are proud that we are one of them. We also welcome the new longer term contracts as they provide the stability to our rail business that should naturally create efficiencies, benefiting both Atkins and Network Rail.”

Douglas McCormick, managing director of Atkins’ rail business commented: “Delivering a programme of work such as this requires a depth and breadth of capability that only a few companies can provide. It is not only about delivering resources though; it is about sharing innovation, delivering international best practice and ensuring the kind of project management that will give value for money. These contracts were highly sought after and we are extremely pleased that we have been successful.”

Atkins is one of the UK rail industry’s key players, and is involved with the station and tunnelling design on London’s Crossrail, the transformation of Birmingham’s New Street station and the Newport area signalling renewal project.
