SWERIG, the Swedish Rail Industry Group, is often referred to as the ‘Swedish National Team of Rail Competence’. Acting on a fairly limited home market which is extremely open to competition, the Swedish rail industry has, over the years, searched for new business opportunities on the international rail market.
For many years, Sweden has had a reputation for benefitting from advanced railway technology. Swedish companies are today well established and recognised internationally. So how has a small country like Sweden achieved that position?
Swedish companies like Ericsson and ASEA (now ABB), both forming part of what is today Bombardier Transportation in Sweden, together with SKF, were early players on the international market with innovative products for the railway sector. ASEA with their electric locomotives, Ericsson with signalling and SKF with bearings paved the way for the formation of clusters of other high-tech companies in the railway industry.
