Deutsche Bahn and Russian Railways RZD intend to intensify cooperation in automotive sector

In Sotchi today, representatives of DB Schenker Rail and TransContainer, a subsidiary of Russian Railways (RZD), in the run-up to this year’s International Rail Business Forum “Transport Systems 1520 and 1435: A Strategy of Cooperation”, reaffirmed the intention of the two companies to cooperate even more closely in future in the automotive sector in Russia. The aim is to meet the growing demands of suppliers and carmakers in the Kaluga region for supplementary logistics services. To this end, approval was given to conduct a study on the feasibility of establishing a logistics joint venture company in Russia.

Reforming Russia’s railway network: final phase

The restructuring of the railway, which has traditionally been a natural monopoly sector of the economy, is an important benchmark for the economic development of all European countries. Russia too is currently in the process of reforming its rail transport, in line with a government-approved programme that has now reached its final phase. Structural reforms are carried out under the close scrutiny of the country’s leadership, and reform issues are discussed at government meetings every year. Ongoing reforms on Russia’s railway network are also approved by experts from the European Conference of Ministers of Transport.

Russian Railways’ financial results provide the clearest indication of the success of this restructuring process, which began in 2001. In 2003, Russian Railways was created as a joint stock company on the basis of the Railway Ministry, with 100% of shares held by the government. This brought a separation of the roles of state management and economic activity on the railway. (more…)

Siemens to build first regional trains for Russian city Sochi

Vladimir Yakunin, president of Russian Railways (RZD), and Peter Löscher, Siemens CEO, today officially launched the production of regional trains for the Russian city Sochi in a ceremony that was attended by Dr. Peter Ramsauer, German Federal Minister of Transport. The first 38 of the total 54 Desiro RUS type regional trains ordered in 2009 are to be built at the Siemens plant in Krefeld, Germany. The increased localization of regional train production in Russia is due to start in 2012 with the manufacture of the remaining 16 Desiro RUS trains under that order. (more…)

Ansaldo STS signs MoU with Russian Railways

Ansaldo STS (STS.MI), a Finmeccanica company, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday in Rome with Russian Railways (RZD) for the creation of a joint venture between Ansaldo STS (49%) and NIIAS (49%) and SM (2%), two of RZD’s subsidiaries, to develop initiatives in railway signalling, telecommunications, automation and safety & security.

SELEX Communications awarded GSM-R contract worth Euro 45 million

The consortium comprising Ansaldo STS and SELEX Communications, Finmeccanica companies and Zarubezhstroytechnology, a subsidiary of Russian Railways JSC RZD, have signed a contract worth a total of about Euro 247 million to build signaling, automation, telecommunications, power supply, security and ticketing systems on the Sirth to Benghazi line in Libya. The shares of competences are approximately 202 millions to Ansaldo STS, and around 45 millions to SELEX Communications as The activities to be undertaken are expected to take approximately three years. Russian Railways invests over 111 billion roubles in 1H2010

In 1H 2010, Russian Railways spend 111.2 billion roubles on its investment programme. The Company spent more than 13 billion roubles on new locomotives and took delivery of 185 freight and passenger locomotives, including 122 electric and 63 diesel locomotives. We also purchased 343 motorised wagons for more than 5 billion roubles.

Developing high-speed rail transport in Russia

The changing economic situation in Russia, and the increase in business and transport activity among the country’s population in recent years, served as an incentive to draw up the Programme for the Development of High-Speed and Very High-Speed Transport, as part of the Strategy for Developing Rail Transport in the Russian Federation up to 2030, adopted by the Russian government in June 2008.

The company is confident that the implementation of this programme will allow it to position rail, in the passenger transport sector, as a competitive service able to provide a high-quality transport product for the Russian population, while yielding profits for the company. (more…)
