In an interview for the European Railway Review, Mr. Trond Børsting, a Civil Engineer in Construction at the Norwegian Technical School of Civil Engineering, explains that Jernbaneverket (the Norwegian National Rail Administration) will be placed under greater strain because the future is likely to bring increased precipitation which has forced them to conduct an extensive inventory of areas prone to landslides. Jernbaneverket is also working closely with the Norwegian Meteorological Institute to establish additional weather stations which will provide more reliable forecasts.
The Ankara-Istanbul High-Speed Train Project is the first high-speed train line of Turkey and is being realized in two phases – the first being the 251km Sincan-Inönü section and the second being the 158km Inönü-Köseköy section. The 24km Ankara-Sincan and 56km long Köseköy-Gebze sections will be completed by being tendered out separately. The 44km Gebze-H.Paﬂa section has not been included within the scope of the project as it wasn’t included in the scope of Marmaray Project.
The bearing performance of railway embankments on soft ground can be improved by high strength geosynthetic reinforcement products. Under operating conditions, the reinforcement is submitted to static and dynamic forces. The geosynthetic reinforcement products are made out of polymer materials, which show visco-elastic behaviour. Their long term deformation and strength depend on their creep behaviour under static loads and on their endurance properties under repeated cyclic traffic loads. In addition to short term tensile tests and creep tests, appropriate tests under cyclic loading have to be carried out in order to evaluate the long term response of geosynthetic reinforcement to dynamic actions.
