The Danish parliament Manager, Engineering Team of the Signalling Programme, Banedanmark has decided to fund a €3.2 billion replacement programme of renewing all Danish railway signalling before 2021. The programme is unique in Europe both in size and in its approach of focusing on economies of scale and creating a competitive market situation to ensure the best possible price and quality.
The programme also introduces a step change in technology which maximises the possibilities and benefits of re-signalling the Danish railway network. Customer benefits from the programme include higher reliability, higher line speed at selected lines and homogenous high safety across the country. (more…)

The new Citytunnel in Malmö is the next major step to connect the City centres of Malmö (Sweden) and Copenhagen (Denmark) even closer. The new line, connected to the Öresund-bridge and the Malmö Main Station will go underneath the centre of Malmö, crossing sensitive areas with hospitals, theatres and private houses and will avoid a change of directions during the stop at Malmö Central.
Rhomberg Bahntechnik has awarded the contract to construct the entire slab track type HA-LVT (high attenuation low vibration track), which has been chosen to minimise the vibrations of the trains which pass the buildings in little depth. The slab track portion of the project is about 13km, whereof 11km are in a single track tunnel. Six turnouts and a crossing in slab track will be installed as well.
The main challenges in this project are given by the short construction time in combination with very limited access to the tunnels and to the area of the main railway station, Malmö C which lies in the City centre of Malmö. The whole logistic supply during the construction will therefore be done railbound from the southern portal, Hyllie, to avoid works and transports in the in the City as much as possible. (more…)

The goal for DSB (Danish State Railways) is that in the future 20% of our turnover shall be earned abroad – outside Denmark. The new company, DSBFirst, is an important step in reaching this goal.
On 11 January 2009, the first great border crossing passenger operation in Northern Europe, run by one single operator, started in the Øresund region covering the heavy passenger traffic in the greater Copenhagen area and the Malmoe region in southwestern Sweden. The winner was a new company – DSBFirst – a joint venture between DSB (70%) and Scotland based FirstGroup (30%). As of now, DSBFirst is the dominating operator of passenger trains in southern Sweden.

Over recent years, minds have been focused on improving the system reliability of the Dutch railways. So far, it has proved possible to shoehorn the capacity requested by transport operators into the timetable each year, even though the network is one of the most intensively used in Europe. Now that reliability has been put in order, and the demand for capacity is increasing, the time is right for expansion and for raising capacity utilisation above traditional standards.

In 2005, the Danish railway experienced a major crisis, suffering massive delays due to poor track standards and failing signalling systems. Two issues were behind the problems; the railway had been, and was, under-funded and there was a significant lack of technical and managerial control of the infrastructure. Lack of control working in concert with money shortage led to an accelerated degradation.
As chance will have it, this crisis surfaced into public view in 2005 – two years after a much celebrated political agreement for the future railway from 2005 – 2014. This means that Rail Net Denmark, the state owned railway asset management company, was then facing general political mistrust. This fact was further augmented by multiple critical reports from the state auditor.

At the beginning of April 2007, one of the first DSB IC3 train sets reached a historic landmark.
It has been recorded that train set MF 5010 has clocked up five million train kilometres since 1990 – a distance which is the equivalent to 125 journeys around the Earth or 15,193 journeys between Copenhagen and Århus. Even though DSB is well renowned for exploiting its rolling stock in an efficient way, never before has the company’s rolling stock clocked up so many kilometres in such a short time. (more…)

Banedanmark face great challenges in the coming years. New funds from the Danish government will make it possible for Banedanmark to renew large parts of the Danish State rail network over the next seven years. Another huge challenge is a total renewal of the entire signalling system introducing an ERTMS based system in Denmark.
The Danish Railway has been facing great challenges over the past five years. A major part of the rail network dates back to the 60s and 70s and despite great efforts to maintain the network, the poor condition of tracks, signals and other infrastructure elements have caused major problems for train traffic across the country.
The problems come at a time when the need for transport in Denmark is constantly and rapidly increasing. Statistics show that the population’s need to move over longer distances is growing. Though the number of train passengers being transported on the Danish rail network has increased over the last 10 years, the increase in road traffic has been even larger. It is therefore urgent that something has to be done about the rail network in order to make train transport more attractive, not least for environmental reasons. (more…)
