Bombardier to deliver additional TWINDEXX Vario double-deck coaches for greater Bremen area

Bombardier Transportation will supply an additional 18 TWINDEXX Vario coaches with regional train equipment to Deutsche Bahn AG (DB AG) to meet increasing passenger demand on the DB Regio Nord network in Germany. The order, valued at approximately 34 million euro ($44 million US), is part of an existing framework agreement signed in December 2008. DB AG previously ordered 135 of the latest generation variable double-deck coaches in January 2011 for intercity service as well as three motorised cab cars for its regional network. (more…)

Bombardier to deliver rail control equipment for Polish Railways

Bombardier Transportation has signed a four-year agreement for the delivery of its rail traffic control equipment and spare parts for the Polish rail network. The contract, awarded by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe SA, the Polish Railway Lines Administration, is valued at approximately 36 million Polish zloty (8 million euro or $11 million US).

Bombardier Transportation and Infineon enter into strategic partnership

Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) and Bombardier Transportation have entered into a strategic partnership in the field of drive electronics for advanced rail vehicles. The agreement envisages the supply of semiconductor components by Infineon to Bombardier in the course of the coming five years. These power semiconductors enable energy-efficient control of electric motors in locomotives, high-speed trains, underground and urban railways. Infineon will ensure supplies by reserving manufacturing capacity for Bombardier. Bombardier will contribute towards the investment costs required. Furthermore, the two companies will join forces in developing the drive electronics for trains with a view to optimizing the energy efficiency and reliability.

Passengers benefit from early arrival of all 30 of NXEA’s New Class 379 Trains

All 30 of National Express East Anglia’s new Class 379 trains are now in service ahead of schedule, following the delivery of the last two of the trains from Bombardier Transportation. The announcement is excellent news for passengers on NXEA’s West Anglia routes, with many services operated by the new trains and a number of other enhancements on course to be delivered later in the year.

Bombardier celebrates the opening of the extended phase 1 operations for the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link in Johannesburg

Bombardier Transportation today celebrated the opening of the extended first phase of the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link in Johannesburg, South Africa. The network now reaches from Rosebank Station in Johannesburg to Hatfeild Station in Tshwane (formerly Pretoria), enabling the commencement of passenger services across the 74 km system. The new self-contained integrated rail system features a fleet of BOMBARDIER ELECTROSTAR intercity trains and the BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 250 train control technology to provide smooth and safe travel for passengers at speeds of up to 160 km per hour.

Bombardier Marks 14th North American BiLevel Rail Car Customer with Orlando-area Project

Bombardier Transportation announced that it has received an order from the Florida Department of Transportation for the supply of 14 BOMBARDIER BiLevel rail cars for the central Florida SunRail commuter rail project to provide service to the Orlando area. This 14-car order brings the total number of North American BiLevel car customers to 14 with nearly 1,000 cars already in operation across the United States and Canada. Hundreds of thousands of commuters in major metropolitan centers including Miami, Dallas/Forth Worth, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Franciso, Seattle, Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal rely on Bombardier BiLevel commuter rail cars to get them to and from work every day.

Joining forces to meet the challenges ahead for the European rail sector, the Presidents and CEOs of the largest European rail suppliers companies Alstom Transport, AnsaldoBreda, Ansaldo STS, Balfour Beatty Rail, Bombardier Transportation, CAF, Faiveley Transport, Invensys Rail, Knorr-Bremse, Thales Group, and Siemens Mobility on 1 July 2011 signed a Declaration of Intent to launch a Joint Technology Initiative. This agreement paves the way for a step change into railway research and industry driven innovation.

Bombardier Transportation announces proposed downsizing at its Derby facility

Bombardier Transportation today announced that it will initiate a 90 day statutory consultation process to downsize and adjust capacity at its train manufacturing facility in Derby. Employees were told today that there was not sufficient workload going forward to keep the facility operating at current levels. A total of 446 permanent jobs and 983 temporary contract staff would be affected in the proposed readjustment. (more…)

Bombardier Transportation invests in Quebec to strengthen its position in North America

Bombardier Transportation announced today that it is creating a Product Design and Development Centre for North America in Saint-Bruno, Quebec. The world leader in rail technology will also build a new state-of-the-art test track at its manufacturing plant in La Pocatière, Quebec. These projects represent a total investment of $17 million CDN ($17 million US, 12 million euro) over the next 18 months.

700th Autorail Grande Capacite leaves Bombardier Transportation workshops

Bombardier Transportation teams celebrated the departure of the 700th Autorail Grande Capacite (AGC) regional train from their Crespin workshops, the last in the largest train series in France in recent years. To mark the occasion, Jean Berge, President of Bombardier Transportation France presented the train keys to Dominique Plancke, Chairman of the transport commission of Nord-Pas de Calais regional council, who represented the regional council’s Chairman Daniel Percheron, in the presence of Jacques Goolen, SNCF Regional Director. Innovation – a major sucess factor for future product developments within Bombardier Transportation Bogie Business Unit

Since the 1930s, the rolling stock industry lost its role as ‘technology and innovation driver’ which it held for a century from the 1830s to 1930s, to the aircraft and automotive industry. Today, the railway industry is perceived as a ‘technology follower’ rather than a ‘technology driver’.

In addition, a reduction of the prices for rolling stock can be observed since the mid-90s starting with the liberalisation of the operator and rolling stock builder’s market.

The expectation from our customers for further cost reductions cannot always be fulfilled with design to cost, production improvement and global sourcing activities. (more…)
