Bombardier receives additional order from Västtrafik for its environmentally friendly REGINA trains

Bombardier Transportation has received an order from Västtrafik for six new three-car BOMBARDIER REGINA high speed trains, thus increasing its fleet to a total of 26 trains. The contract is valued at 73 million euro (640 million SEK, $101 million US). Delivery will take place during 2013.
In addition to the REGINA trains, the Västtrafik fleet also includes the BOMBARDIER ITINO diesel multiple units which are successfully in operation since 2006.
Since they were introduced in 1999, REGINA trains have contributed to strong passenger growth in markets where they operate. The REGINA train is suitable for a variety of train operations such as regional, interregional and intercity traffic.
REGINA trains are highly reliable and proven to withstand the harsh winter climate of northern Europe. The service provided by REGINA trains in Gothenburg and Gävle is testament to an outstandingly high level of availability – more than 99 per cent of scheduled traffic – which is achieved by efficient maintenance and organisation.
Innovative BOMBARDIER MITRAC propulsion and control equipment, featuring for example regenerative braking, saves up to 20 per cent more energy than the previous generation of high speed trains. In addition, radial steered bogies reduce track forces and thus minimise the wear and tear of the tracks.
Lars Backström, Managing Director Västtrafik, said: “Thanks to their comfort and proven reliability, the REGINA trains are highly appreciated by our passengers. As our region continues to experience strong passenger growth, we want to meet that demand with more of this type of trains, which we have good experience of.”
Klas Wåhlberg, President of Bombardier Transportation Sweden, added: “This new order confirms our continued strength in the Scandinavian market. We are proud that our customer has again placed its confidence in our high speed intercity REGINA trains, which offer the most reliable solution to the expanding number of passengers in the region.”
Project management and lead engineering of the trains will take place in Västerås, Sweden, where the MITRAC propulsion system will also be designed and manufactured. The trains’ European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) will be developed and engineered at Bombardier in Stockholm. In Germany, the trains will be assembled at Bombardier’s Hennigsdorf site, the car bodies will be produced in Görlitz, and the bogies in Siegen.
