Deutsche Bahn will operate regional transport lines in the north of Sweden in cooperation with the Swedish state railway. Services on the 4.7-million train-kilometre network will begin in stages as from August.
Deutsche Bahn remains headed for success outside Germany: together with its partner company, the Swedish state railway SJ, DB’s regional transport subsidiary DB Regio Sverige has won the tender for operation of regional transport lines in the north of Sweden.
Services on the Norrtåg line, some of which is still under construction, are to begin in stages as from August 2010. From 2013, operations will involve 4.7 million train-kilometres per annum and can be expanded by a further 2.2 million train-kilometres. The contract has a term of six years, with an option of renewal for a further five years.
Similar traffic performance to that of Südostbayernbahn
Amongst other things, the lines in the province of Norrland will link the cities of Sundsvall, Umeå, Luleå and Kiruna, providing connections to the important ore-mining regions in the far north of Sweden. Two lines will extend to Trondheim and Narvik in Norway. The traffic performance which was up for tender is comparable to that of Südostbayernbahn in Germany, which is also operated by DB Regio. The scope of the contract includes operation of the rail transports, on-board service, maintenance and ticket sales. The rolling stock will be supplied by Norrtåg, the Swedish party which orders the transports.
