The faculty of civil engineering and geodesy of Technische Universität München offers various degree courses for civil engineering, environmental engineering, geodesy and geoinformation. The Chair and Institute of Road, Railway and Airfield Construction is part of this faculty.
The chair and institute do research and development for more than 5 decades in the fields of road, railway and airfield construction. During this time various research projects were finished in collaboration with international customers, contracting authority, private industry and foundations. These research projects are documented in about 2500 reports.
Due to this research activity chair and institute were and still are significantly involved on innovative developments in superstructure in the fields of road and railway construction. Among other things the research projects in the fields of railway construction had significant influence on the development of the welded track, the prestressed concrete sleeper as well as the slab track. A further field of research is the shielding of structure-born sound and vibration.
In the field of road construction chair and institute were involved in the experimental determination of the significant material properties to dimension asphalt pavement and in the development of the jointed plain concrete pavement.
On the institute experiments can be made not only on several components of superstructure, but also on complete superstructure systems in full-scale.
The major advantage for research as well as for teachings is to realise the synergies of road and railway construction.
