Toshiba and SMRT create a joint venture at InnoTrans 2014

26 September 2014  •  Author: InnoTrans 2014

During InnoTrans 2014, a joint venture by the name of ‘Railise’ was announced by Singapore Rail Engineering (SRE), a subsidiary of SMRT, the leading multimodal public transport operator in Singapore, and the Japanese group Toshiba. The purpose of this new company is the worldwide marketing and supply of Toshiba’s permanent magnet synchronous motor technology (PMSM) outside Japan.

“Working together with SMRT and SRE, this decision creates the right conditions for launching our PMSM system on the world market”, said Toshio Masaki, Senior Executive Vice President of Toshiba. PMSM represents a major advance in rail traction systems and its distinguishing features are its low energy consumption, reduced noise levels and ease of maintenance.”

Desmond Kuek, President and Group CEO of SMRT added: “In view of the fact that Asian countries are expanding their rail networks in order to meet the pressing transport needs of their rapidly growing urban populations, we believe that PMSM technology offers a significant potential throughout all sectors of the added value chain for the railways.”
