Crossrail today confirmed the shortlist for the non-traction high voltage power supply contract.

The following organisations will be invited to tender later this year:

  • ABB
  • AC JV (an Alstom Transport and Costain Limited Joint Venture)
  • Balfour Beatty Engineering Services Limited
  • Rail Power Joint Venture (a Siemens PLC and J. Murphy & Sons Limited Joint Venture)
  • UK Power Networks (Commercial) Limited

Crossrail will operate a high-frequency metro service of up to 24 trains per hour during the peak between Whitechapel and Paddington through new-tunnels under central London. Construction of the new tunnels is now underway with the first TBM already on its journey towards Farringdon. The second TBM will be launched later this summer.

The scope of works includes the provision of electrical power, distributed at 22kV or 11kV, within the tunnels and surface sections of the central section of Crossrail. The network will extend from Royal Oak Portal in the west to Pudding Mill Lane in the east, splitting at Stepney Green Junction and running to Plumstead Portal in the south east.

The system will also provide a dedicated, highly reliable power supply for use at stations, shafts and portals for all local and railway system loads with the exception of the traction power for the trains.
