Mechan is the exclusive supplier of NextSense’s CALIPRI-Wheel system for the UK and Ireland, which is the first handheld, non-contact measuring device specifically developed to determine wear on railway wheelsets, brake discs, wheel clearance (back-to-back), rail profiles and switches/crossings. The optoelectronic gauge records geometrical data for any complex-shaped object and can be individually tailored by Mechan to the needs of each user

CALIPRI-Wheel is able to carry out the complete measurement of each wheel in just five seconds and requires only a single operative to carry this out, which significantly increases productivity. Once the entire wheel profile has been recorded, the data is evaluated and the measurement values shown on the display. If any of the specified tolerances are exceeded, this is indicated immediately.

The system is now available to hire on short or long term rental periods. This additional service will allow train operators and maintainers to access the Calipri system for campaign based maintenance activities, without the full commitment of purchase.

Richard Carr, Managing Director of Mechan Ltd, explains: “We are delighted to offer this additional hire service offer and look forward to helping many other train operating companies to benefit in the future. We have a number of CALIPRI Wheel units out on hirel and have had some really positive feedback to this exciting new method of measurement and inspection that has tremendous cost and time efficiencies for train operators.”
